I am thinking about purchasing a boat that has a '91 johnson 70hp v-pro. It has been used in saltwater only. Man says he hasn't had any trouble in 8 years but when it was new had trouble with oil injection. Is this a dependable motor that will last?

Yes, the 70 hp. "looper" as they are called is a good engine. It has been around for a long time.

Test, or have tested, the compression. It should be over 100 psi. in all three cyls's. and should be within 5-10 psi of each other.

You mention "v-pro" in your description. Do you mean VRO?

Yes I guess I do mean vro I just glanced at the motor guess I saw an extra p in there. The lower unit has paint missing and has corrosion spots but its clean. Its lived in a garage on the beach. Is this something to be worried about? Cranked it up and fired right up on the tough of the key, and hasn't been out for at least 2 years.

aggiequackmaster,

Running the engine out of the water, on the muffs, is no indication of how it will perform under load. You really need the compression test or a sea trial.

Were gonna take it out in two weeks to see how it performs. Thanks for the input.
