bobby515,

I thought this post sounded familiar... Read your prior posts along with the responses. You get the idea.

Previous Post 1

Previous Post 2

Previous Post 3

Since it seems like you really want a 3.0, why don't you get one that is 1 to 3 years old. I'll bet you can get one for pretty cheap. If you have to have a new boat, buy the cheapest 3.0 you can find (Bayliner, Stingray, Glastron, etc) so you don't get killed on resale.

By the way you can get a new Tahoe Q4 (Boat motor and trailer) with a 4.3 for the same price you are looking to pay for the 2003 Chap with 3.0 ($15,995). You can get the 2004 Bayliner 185 with a 4.3 for less than $15,000.

I'm surprised to hear of such good performace with a 3.0L At 5000RPM (probably more than recommended) and 1.98 drive ratio, a 19 pitch prop with zero slip has a theoretic best of 45 MPH realistically that set up provides atop end in the 35 to 38 MPH range. If you're serious about buying a 3 to 5 year old boat and are looking for all-around water sport performance, move to the 6-banger, a year from now you won't regret it.

Re: is a 4cyl undered powered for a 18ft chaperall

THANKS FOR ALL THE replys, i made a post about 1 month ago and was going to buy new 10k bayliner then all you great guys gave me much better ideas, well i got boats out of my head for 1 full month and then..bam its..........back the buying mode.but?? not 2 bad ..i live in phila we have a short season, used boats are over priced, i used to live in fla 13 yrs so i guess you know what i mean... i was thinking on doing without a boat this year and getting a new 18ft w/ 4.3 next yr. but i am dreaming again ...i really want new because i used this post so many times over the last 3 yrs on fixing outboard that my summers were ruined....so when i saw a new 2003 chaperall 3.0 with sport seating top etc c/d 15995.00 i thought it was a fair deal and would serve me well, but with you guys input i am starting to think 4.3 again...3.0 would be fine by 4.3 would be great..
but major point is why does dealer still have 3.0 2003 ....like posted eariler...the answer is no one want that boat without 6 cyl...if it were a bayliner it would sell but its better quality boat with all the goods with 4cly....i am going to find out about tahoe, i call today and was told with 6cly 17,700... i will call other dealers but if i spend 17700 for tahoe i can get lots of nice boats like crown line caravelle etc for 19-20.. buts that out of my range but if i push 17700 i can push 19k
also the chap had a sticker price of about 20k so it had a big discount, when i called tahoe dealer he told me 17700 bottom line in stock and i ask what was msrp and he said its has about 30% markup???but no msrp i need to check this out
thanks everyone. i will let you guys know about tahoe
bob in philly

bobby515,

I'm not surprised the Tahoe Q4 is $17,700. I just checked and the $15,995 is for the base boat with a 4.3, no options, plus freight and prep. Make sure you get the "out the door price" when talking to dealers and then have them "break down" the total cost.

I'm right over the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in New Jersey. There are a couple of marinas on the Delaware River (on the Jersey side) about 10 minutes from the bridge. They carry new and used boats. For example, Dredge Harbor has a 2004 Maxum 1800MX with a 3.0L Mercruiser Engine, Single Axle Galvanized Trailer, Bimini Top w/Boot, Power Steering, Cockpit Cover, and Bow Well Cover and includes freight and prep for $15,125. Thay also have the Bayliner 175 in stock for $10,995. Tax, title and registration fees are additional.

FYI. When I was at Dredge Harbor a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that they had a couple of new 2000 Wellcraft 190 Fisherman's. The story is that they got them from a bankrupt dealer. They put new 2003 Galvanized roller trailers under them with new 2003 115HP Johnson's for $15,900. Seemed like a good price since they had a new 2003 180 Fisherman with trailer and 125 Mercury for around $19,900(?).

I'm not affiliated with Dredge Harbor. They are a pleasure to do business with. Good people.

Anyway drop me a note if I can be of assistance: mblake0729@yahoo.com

EDIT: I think the Maxum 1800MX also includes fiberglass liner with snap-in carpet.

You need to call your nearest bas pro shop if you are intrested in a Tahoe. you can also go to their web site and get the details of whats included along with top speed. Maybe independant dealers are allowed some markup, but bass pro is not.

OK, South Philly.

I didn't look at the Maxum 1800MX that closely because it did not fit my needs but it looked like a nice entry level boat. Fit and finish was good. The sales guy at the marina said the majority of people that bought the 1800MX came in initially to look at the Bayliner 175. Remember, you could get the 1800MX cheaper with less options.

I Liked the 2004 Maxum 1800SR3. Sharp boat. Dredge Harbor was selling boat, motor (4.3), trailer, additional options (I forget specifics.), freight and prep for about $19,995(?) at their in-house boat show back in March. Again it was a little small for my needs. I spent $1000 more and got a 2004 Bayliner 205 with 5.0. Not as nice as the Maxum but it fit my needs and budget.

Check out this link for more details on the boat I bought plus some other boats I looked at.

"used boats are over priced"? Not in comparison to new ones they're not.

Buy a clean, well kept, late model boat that is powered and set up for what you want to do. It takes an awful lot of problems to amount to the kind of money you will lose when you drive that new one off the lot. And in the case of the particular boat you are looking at...if the dealer can't sell it, how do you think it will go for you when the time comes?

Even if you think that size, type boat with the 3L engine is the one for you...buy one that's a couple of years old and spend half the money. There are plenty of them out there because the owners want more power.

Buy a new boat... the price on the Bayliner 175 is just as affordable as a used boat, and I can tell you the 175 is of great quality. "Buy a clean, well kept late model boat.." yeah, good advice, but with used boats, unless the guy kept a log or something, its impossible to tell where its been or how hard its been run... Very Risky. With the new boat, you get an entry level boat that will help you decide what you need in your next one, at a great price. Plus, no headaches about repairs and a full warranty!!
