Is a '65 Starcraft 16' worth $600?

I was looking at a 1965 Starcraft 16' Aluminum boat with a 65HP envriude on it. The trailer is basically shot and the motor is questionable. I gave him a tentative $600 offer and was thinking about taking a couple new plugs he had in the boat, a battery and my fuel tank off my other boat over there and seeing if it would run.

The boat could use a repaint. The transom has been replaced and the floor is solid.

Anyone think it is worth $600?

Welcome Aboard!

Any idea what model is it? An open bow walk through Super Sport? A closed bow Holiday?
What year is the rude? What leads you to say it is questionable?
With the trailer shot..and not knowing about the motor, I may think 4-500 is a good PROJECT boat price.

Not too bad but.......get a water test. Some parts and manuals for the older motors are NLA and you might encounter some real problems.

It is a closed bow with no windshield (at least not anymore). If I had to guess, I'd say it's a Jupiter. the seat goes all the way across and has a notch cut out of it to crawl into it.

Motor is also a '65. I just say it is questionable because it isn't running. He says it was winterized after the last time he used it and the stickers on the side expired in '99. I'm not too experienced with O/B motors, but not too bad with rebuilding car motors. I do know that if the motor doesn't run, it could be a money pit. If it does run, it seems to be quite a deal.

It's not pretty, but I think it has potential. I'm a budget Jeeper and might as well be a budget boater as well.

To me $600 would be a little high, ( for my area ) Here is a slide show of my 1964 Jupiter resto that I did last year. It will give you some information to help with your decision. The trailer I got was in good shape with Brand new tires and rims. I also got new lights complete with new wires. and some other odds and ends. motor was a 1989 Yamaha that turned out to be in great shape, ( took the owners word that it was good but needed a tune up because it would not idle ) All I had to do was buy a manual and clean the carbs ( pulled them off and dipped them )

If you have a compression tester, I suggest you do a compression check on the motor before you buy, You might not get as lucky as I did...

What motor is it, Johnson, merc....? The older Johnsons are easier to fix up, parts are still available, and the design is simple. Does the motor turn over? Compression test would be helpful as N1265 said.

Windshields are hard to find I think. That would drive the price down some for me.

Bottom line for me;
If the motor is not siezed, $400-$600. I would tend toword the lower end but I'm a cheapo.

Good luck PK

Bwana has a point, check to see if the engine turns over. Pull the starter rope. For about $30 you can buy a repair manual for the engine. Not running since 99, I'd say figure on cleaning the lines, and maybe a new fuel pump. West coast prices would be about there, but you might be able to do a bit better negotiating with the guy. What's wrong with the trailer? Pics will help know to do, and keep the hordes with there pitchforks and other implements away. And welcome aboard if you get it.
