I need to get a tachometer replacement. The engine is a 79 Johnson 55hp. Is the 5 pulse right for this engine? Will any tach with a 5 pulse designation work?
From what have been looking at a Teleflex has 4 cylinder 2pulse, 6cyl 3 pulse , 8cyl 4 pulse selection plus a 6 pulse and 5 pulse. Will that type tach work properly on my engine?

The alternator in a 79 Johnson 55HP has 12 poles so you would set the tach at 6 pulses.

I saw a application chart a while back and the 78-89 was 5 pulse? So any outboard tach with a 6 pulse designation will work?

Set it at 5 pulse and you should be okay. I believe that mtr has a 10 pole flywheel.
