With a volt meter or a hydrometer.

check the voltage with the motor off.<br />start the engine if the voltage is higher...it is charging.<br />12-13V with motor off 14-16 with motor on.<br /><br />DO NOT DISCONECT THE BATTERY TERMINALS WHILE IT IS RUNNING.

You may want to have the batt load tested. At any auto parts store if you have trouble starting if it shows that it is charging. It could have a bad cell<br />Tim
