is boat going to be under powered

hiya buying a 5m open dingy which has a maximum specification on the motor of 60hp the dealer is recomending i put a 40 on it boat weighs 260kg (570lbs) just wondering speeds i can expect out of this unit

Hard to compare, as hull design will have an effect.<br />I run a 17' Boaton Whaler (950 lbs), Mercury 50 HP 4 stroke (224 lbs) and passengers, fuel and gear (500 lbs). Totals out to 1674 lbs and top speed is 32 mph per GPS.

If it's within your budget get the maximum allowed power now or you may regret it later. That extra 10-15 MPH will be worth it!

I agree with Jacques321. It's a lot nicer to have the power and not use it than need (or want) it and not have it. Actually it's rather heartbreaking. If funds allow go with the larger size.
