Is Changing a Alpha Gen 2 1.50 to 1.62 OK

I have a 1992 22 ft Larson w/ a 5.7
I have to put some $ into my current drive 1.5
There is a 1.62 drive avail locally that is ready to go
Is this possible or if the ratio differance too much. Would it reqire a Prop change?
What would the ramifications be? Just exploring the possibilites

Yes. it will need a markedly higher pitch prop.

You can have a look at a prop calculator to determine though....

For example, if you're now using a 17p prop and you get about 45 mph at WOT, you'll drop to about 40 or less with a 1.68 drive...

It might come out of the hole a little more sprightly though!

it'll work fine, but as mentioned above, you'll need a couple inches pitch higher prop - assuming that it's propped right now. it'll actualy probably work a little better on your boat than the 1.5 once proped right and you won't be too far off to use your original prop for a while as long as you watch that you don't over rev it at running it wide open.

The little down side is that the gears are a bit weaker due to the ratio.
Larger pitch prop, more torque... etc...etc.
It ll work tho.

Something else to think on, what is the price on that local rebuild? Have you checked out the SEI drives here on iboats?

Ayuh,... And depending on the pitch of the prop Now,...
You may not be able to buy 1 Big enough...

Factor 1.08, step up 2" in pitch. Well... in theory that is.

Either is his outdrive
