Beefer, it is a good thing to start worrying early! Just check the registry of child molesters in your area and you will be appalled! Have to worry about who's house you leave the kids to play for a day. Could have a funny uncle, brother or dad in the house.

Don't even let the kids off the property alone anymore. Either due to coyotes, bears, or child molesters. The coyotes and bears I can deal with. ;)

Anyway, I saw the guy who made the comment in the elevator this morning. Hit the Stop button and beat the crap out of him.

:D jk.

Oh, and I keep telling my wife and relatives to stop telling the kids how beautiful or handsome they are. Don't want them to think that will give them special privileges in life (even though in reality beautiful people do have an advantage over us plain looking folks). I want my kids to think they are special because they are smart and or talented, not for their looks. They will figure the looks part out soon enough.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

Here in Australia the phrase "Eye Candy" can have a multitude of meanings and is used for good looking machinery as well as people. It is non-gender specific, but can (and often does), have a sexual meaning. Having read all the responses to Mark's original post it seems the phrase is more sexually oriented in the US, but there appears to be some doubt as to whether the co-worker meant it in any way other than "what a great looking daughter you have". Personally I'd give the guy the benefit of that doubt (for now) but withdraw from sharing further personal moments with him. Good luck,

TII

DItto from me. Like you, if someone told me that about my daughter, I would raise an eyebrow as well, but since he told you knowing that you were her father, I believe he likely meant it like the "good looking machinery non-gender thing" as said above. I would think most weirdos are more sneaky than you let you know what they're really thinking. It was a bad choice of words, but that is probably all there is to it. You handled it well by not commenting. I know I have said some totally stupid things that didn't come out with the meaning I meant them to have in the past.

She's certainly very pretty, but she also looks, at most, about 13. Eye candy would be the wrong phrase, "future heart breaker" would fit though!

I'm imagining this guy felt just as dumb about his choice of words as we do about 0.5secs after he said it.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

I read an article yesterday, about how young girls are beginning to reach puberty at younger ages than they have in the past, It went on to describe reasons why, such as the ever growing problem with kids being overweight, etc. Because of this, some 11 year old girls have bodies that are more developed than we "old guys" are used to seeing.

That said, they still look like 11 year olds. Making such a comment about a girl who is obviously under 18, is out of line and my opinion of the matter, is that the guy was being a moron. As to whether he is a perv, I'm not so sure that I would go that far - there is no shortage of socially stupid people in the world and he may just be one of them.

On the other hand, if he asks you if he can take her out on a date, you might want to have a little "chat" with him, in a private place.

I know age is a big factor with this topic, but what about respect. I don't care if your daughter is 25 and a freaking knock out, whoever is looking at her or pictures of her should have enough respect for you to not make any comments that can be taken the wrong way. I think the guy needs a little straightening!

She looks too young to me, like a little girl with WAY too much makeup on.

Good point!

BTW, the girl in the photo is not a minor. The photo is off of a porn site.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

I have been sitting back and watching this thread develop, waiting to see if someone would hit on my thoughts. Finally the issue of respect came up. Personally, I hate the term, for any person of any age. It is a term that carries no respect, no giving, or compliment to the person, only taking. It is all about the person making the comment ... it is their eye candy.

To me it speaks of gratification to the person making the comment, with no consideration to how it might make the other person feel. I think it was rude and insensative to make such a comment about ANYONES daughter, or son, regardless of age. If you say that to me about my kids, you will get an, "Excuse me?!?' really quickly. Okay, so maybe I am protective of my kids ... oldest is 27 and getting married on Saturday, and I am sure her husband-to-be doesn't want to hear her described that way by his friends, or anyone else for that matter.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

This is eye candy. The model is a grown woman, who asked me to do a photoshoot for portfolio development. Her intent was to build a "book" that would help her get modeling gigs, in markets that feature this "look."

The difference between this and what the OP described, is that the grown woman in my photo, chooses to feature herself as being "grown & sexy" and as an adult, it is appropriate for her to do so if she wants to.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

Mark,

You are a better man than me. I am known to be patient and tolerant. However, that would push one of my buttons.

If someone had made that comment about my daughter, my brother's daughters, or my friends' daughters. There would have been no warning, just my huge fist on a collision course with the creep's mouth.

If that comment was directed at an unknown to me, obviously a minor, then the creep would've gotten a firm, on the spot "What the @#$% is wrong with you !"

I have learned to walk away from some things, but that would have set me off.

I too, would suggest removing your daughter's pic from this thread.

Re: Is "Eye Candy" an insult?

Ok, here is my son and daughter. She is your basic skinny little kid. She is actually still 10 years old, will be 11 in a couple of months (but she always tells me she is 11 when she wants to stay up late, etc).

My son (6 going on 7, in the pic above) likes to take pictures. He took this one of his sister later that day. She has no makeup, lipstick, etc. Just a tan. BTW, He needs to frame pics better! LOL! I could see where this one might make her look maybe 13 or so, but it was the pic above that got the comment.

Hey people, I'm not going to worry about it. Its not worth getting upset over.

Mark...... I had to drag this photo from non-technical and it was only 3 years ago ;) for comparison.

I agree, you should talk to your coworker and give him a chance to explain himself and let him know you find his comment offensive. You owe him a chance to redeem himself (or not).

You co-workers comment was just about an inappropriate as post posting pictures of your young daughter on an internet chat board under the heading Eye Candy

I agree. Please remove these pictures for your children's sake.
