Is it 150hp, or 200hp

I have a 1980 Evinrude 150. After reviewing the SELOC manual and checking on virtually every part on the motor and from what I can tell it specs out to be identical to the 175 and 200 horse engines for the same year. I checked every thing from the coils, power pack, cylinders, bore, stroke, spark plugs compression, crank, fuel pump, stator, rectifier, maximum cylinder height, minimum cylinder height, etc. I have heard that the exhuast manifold and the carbs is the only difference, but I can't find anything that would indicate they are diffent either. All three of the engines are 149 cubic inches and the all of the engine specs/parts have the same part numbers. I cannot find any detailed information on the carburators, but I don't know what effect the carb jets would have. Someone please enlighten me on the differences between the 150 and the 200 motor.<br /><br />Thanks

The horsepower differences are achieved with some combination of the following. Carbs w/larger venturi and bigger jets. Intake manifold and/or reed-valves and reed-stops, port timing (not the same as ignition timing) and exhaust adapter (sometimes refered to as exhaust megaphone). If you're trying to turn your 150 into a 200, - the porting is different and the cost of the conversion far exceeds the value of the motor.<br /><br />-John

Thanks for all of the information John..... I was not neccasarily trying to convert my 150 to a 200, but found it interesting that that Evinrude was able to generate that much more horse power with the virtually the same engine, so I was intriqued. I am interested in getting more top end/horse power out of my motor. Any suggestions? I really appreciate the information...

Try bigger jets, if that raises your rpm over your motors red line then get a bigger prop. ( or be happy the motor runs now )
