I bought a motor and would like to know if it is 3.5 or a 7.5 HP. The model number is 217-58587-0 and the serial number is 5D-198918.

Also, interested in knowing the manafacturer and if it utilizes an impeller that might need changing.

Appreciate any help!

Your motor is a 4 hp 1970 built by Eska for Sears.
It uses an aircooled Tecumseh powerhead with a water cooled exhaust leg. There is a water pump.Water should mist out of the Exhaust relief holes on the leg.
These motors are poor performers so unless you like to tinker I wouldn't put too much money into it.

I did a search on Sears for parts and got:

Model Number Model Description Brand
217585870 SEARS 7.5 H.P. OUTBOARD MOTOR CRAFTSMAN

Some of the Sears online diagrams list this model as a 1975.

I also found this chat, that gives a lot more detail.

I wondering if you visually identified it or used the model #. I sure could use the extra horses. I hoping to use this engine for emgency only propulsion for a 18 FT bay boat.
