Is it a failing fuel pump issue? aq125a

Whenever I start my bayliner cold I have a lot of problems keeping it running until it warms up. It often will die and require more throttle pumping for more gas to start again. Letting it down to idle before it is warm will result in it dead too.

Is my fuel pump not pumping right?

I pump the throttle 3-4 times, put it in neutral with about 25% throttle. Turn the key and it will start pretty well. I'll run it at about 2000 rpms to warm up, but it will usually die, especially if I reduce the rpms.
When it dies, it has no gas. I can crank and crank but won't start until I pump the throttle again to give it gas, and boom it starts right back up.
This goes on and on until it just about warms all the way up to 180.

After it is warm, no problems. Turn it off and on for hours without a problem. Except for, if you stop long enough to cool off the motor, like go swimming for a while, then you are back to pumping gas to get it started again.

There is gas in the carb, so the pump should be ok right?

Carb adjustments only have a idle speed screw and an air mixture screw, and adjusting those for cold temps is no good.

So is this just how it is? Anyway I can make it better?

Thanks.

They don't have a choke, that's the problem. If you had a fuel pump problem, it wouldn't run at all.
They are cold natured, and that is how they act.
A full tuneup including a compression test, dwell adjustment, timing, and proper idle mixture and speed adjustments keeps the the cold starting and idling problems to a minimum.

Thanks Don, this motor sure is cold blooded! I'm going to do a full tune up and see if that helps.
