Everything can be mailed except the frame that contains the serial number. Get caught mailing a serial numbered frame without the proper FFL and you will get in some big federal trouble.
He can ship the entire gun to a FFL holder in your area and you can pick it up from there.
Only Manufacturer's can accept weapons via mail.

Even better...that way, when he gets popped for transporting weapons over state lines, he's the one who gets to deal with the authorities!!
For you to get into trouble by FedEx, it would have to get discovered that it was a firearm. I would be more than tempted to remove any ammo, clips, grips (whatever disassembly you're comfortable with), pack it securely in foam, and ship it.
.... as long as your not trying to fly with Ammunition, .....Nearly all the horror stories I have heard about flying with firearms actually are ammunition related....
