is it normal to smoke so much?

I have an older Johnson Seahorse trolling motor that my dad sent to me to use. After some prep work I did manage to get it to run. The high and low speed adjustments were a bear to adjust correctly. I went with what I have read within this forum....1 1/2 turns on the low and 3/4 turn on the high. This got the motor running but man does it smoke. I am running 50/1 Johnson oil, is it normal for the older motors to smoke like that or can it be reduced by playing with the high and low speed Carb adjustments? <br />Thank you for any advice you may be able to give<br />Jeff

Get it running, do a decarb on it, new gas, new plugs, run it awhile, then try to fine tune it.<br /><br />Decarb:<br /><br />Your intent is to remove the carbon buildup from the cylinders and heads. Buy at least 2 cans of decarb. Some people use one can per cylinder.<br /><br />Run engine at fast idle, with engine running<br />spray liberal amount into each carb,<br />spray some more, spray a larger amount into carbs until engine chokes out and stops,<br />remove spark plugs and spray decarb into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for 1 to 12 hours. <br />Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine.

Those settings are just to start you need to fine tune each warm at appropriate speed.Dont run at 50:1 till we know the year.Most small motors with <br />low and high speed adjust require at least 24:1<br /> Give us the model number well get the year.

Especially smokes if you are driveway yachting in a barrel. Leaves lots of goop in the water too.<br /><br />Get it out and run it. The last one I picked up with a high speed adjustment needed almost a full turn towards lean before it would even getup and go.<br /><br />Probably whay it was aquired inexpensively.
