I have a evinrude115 on the back of a larson senza. It runs good but Ill be out on the water at full throttle (5250) and all of a sudden it shuts down to 2500. Ill slow down for a few minutes and if im lucky it snaps out of it. When problem happens motor feels like its bogging down . Some one said its overheating but it feels cool to warm to touch thanks for any help

Sure sounds like it's going into the S.L.O.W (speed limiting overheat warning) mode. What year engine is it?

c/6

Hooty

Re: is it over heating or not

I'd test the hi-temp alarm first and make sure it works. If the engine is getting hot the alarm should sound as well as it going into S.L.O.W. With the ignition switch "on", ground one of the tan wires going from a temp switch to the control. The alarm horn should sound. If it doesn't, the engine may be over-heating. How long since the waterpump was rebuilt?

c/6

Hooty

LAT,

Ground it with the key "on".

If you have an OMC remote control unit, the horn is in there.

If you have no alarm speaker, you will hear no alarm, even when you ground the tan wire.

c/6

Hooty

he probably hasnt since he said he is rebuilding the boat slowly.
-
if you dont have a manual get one, it helps alot.
the omc service manual is by far the best.

I replaced the water pump at the beginning of this season. I picked up the manual which said if i didn't have a reaction from grounding the temp sensor wires, that i would have to replace the main wiring harness. Is this true? Should i also change the thermostats? Could it be a timing thing?

Re: is it over heating or not

I'm looking at the wiring diagram, for your engine ('90 115hp Evinrude), in a Clymer repair manual and it doesn't show a blocking diode. If that's true, you're engine doesn't have a S.L.O.W mode. If it doesn't feel hot to the touch, it may not be overheating. I'd get the alarm horn installed as soon as possible though, just to be safe.
As far as replacing the t'stats, I'd do that too.
The next time your at max. throttle and the engine speed drops off, bump the primer (choke) and see how the engine responds. If the engine speed picks up momentarily, the engine slowdown is probably a fuel problem. I doubt it's a timing problem. It could be the powerpack but check the carburetion first.
Keep us posted.

c/6

Hooty
