many mullet skiffs have an outboard in the well in the center. its used for going after mullet in 6" of water or less in the flatts. the mullet are in pools - its like shooting fish in a barrel.

Yes, it is posible and it wasn't that difficult either...

What is not shown in the pics are the knee braces going from the inside of the transom down to the stringers and up to the splash well.

Look up the "L drive", it was in some Maximum's and Bayliners in the 80's / early 90's I believe.

Most people prefer to forget that those things ever existed. ;)

Let's reel this back in slightly for the OP . . .

1) Yes you can do it
2) Some hulls have performed well after a conversion like this
3) Most hulls behave poorly due to fore aft weight balance issues. These issues are not easily remedied.

parttime - that looks like a very professional job! nice work.

i was talking to a boat repair/repower tech (greg at greg's marine in garibaldi, ore.) and he showed me a something about I/O to outboard conversions. if you modify the transom like parttime the outboard lower leg is right against the transom and the weight is partially over the boat. if you bolt a large motor mount on the transom and hang the outboard off the mount, you change the balance considerably, as mentioned by QC above...however if you DO decide to add a mount onto the transom, make sure the mount extends to the bottom of the boat, and has 'wings' that extend the bottom to the motor lower leg. the reason for this is that when you try to get on plane and there is a big gap between the motor and the planing plate on the lower end the boat squats...the hull extension acts like a huge doel-fin or large trim tabs. you have to have the extension custom made, but it makes a huge difference.
