I just dropped the lower unit to check the impeller. I've been having an overheat problem (96 112 evinrude). When i pulled the housing i saw the key laying on the plate. So, my question is.... Is it possible for the motor to pee water if the key wasn't engaged???

No. The impeller key must be in place for the impeller to work.

If the impellor came up with the housing its very likely the key was in place and just fell out when the impellor came up.
