Is it safe to slightly overpower my boat by 5hp? How about weight?

So... I've got a 16' nassau. As I understand, it's rated for a 75hp. I was looking at an 80hp mercury. The thing is so big compared to the underpowered little 35hp I have on there now, I'm worried about how it affects balance of the boat. With the 35 and the 4hp kicker, plus with me standing atn the back of the boat, occasionally small waves will make into the splashwell. From my research, the motor weighs 265. My current motor weighs around half of that. Think this will work? Good idea or not?

IMO the 5 extra hp is not an issue. If you have issues with water in the splashwell you will have to look at adjusting some weight forward.

If it's rated for 75 I wouldn't worry about the weight of that 80hp merc. That merc should only be a 4 cylinder so I don't think the weight should be an issue either.

Weight is only one small factor. Torque on the transom would depend on the transom, but if it's in average shape, probably no big deal. Check with you insurance agent, for if it will still be covered. I have a 16 ft that is rated for 85, and a local marina wouldn't sell me a 90 as it would leave him liable if something happened. If you had an accident on the water, the coast guard, or local authority could nail you. Or not, depending on how they want to be. Idaho is pretty lax, but I hear over by Seattle or Portland in Wa they can get sort of picky. For safety, you are probably ok, legally who knows. I have no idea there, if that's Indian land it could be different too.
