Is it suppose to do this?

While doing some engine work I took the shift interruptor system off. The lower shift cable fell out of the plastic sleeve! I stuck it back on, but it doesn't stay on. I know part of it is suppose to slide, but isnt the narrow inner part suppose to stay stuck to the plastic sleeve? When I shift it will push the shift cable, but it will not pull it back out to neutral or shift it into reverse. The inner part of the cable moves freely and I can shift it between forward and reverse easily by hand at the cable.

Right now I'm holding just the plastic part in my hand. I'm confused...

Wish I would have thought of that BEFORE putting the engine back in...

I think I'll just thread the hole and use set screws from both sides. It's probably the easiest way to fix it.

Re: Is it suppose to do this?

i wouldn't trust that plastic cable end to hold set screws in place

there is a lot of force on the cable when shifting

there should be a metal barrel with two set screws that slide into the hole on the plastic end that clamp the inner cable end

could get yourself into a sticky/embarrasing docking situation

That is EXACTLY why backyard mechanics have so many on-going/never ending problems with their boats. They never fix anything the right way. Then they come to a forum and expect people to figure out what they screwed up.

You would be surprised what plastic can hold. Especially the ABS that this is made out of. But a metal barrel would be the better idea. I thought the part that was in there was just plastic to begin with.

Backyard mechanic I am NOT. I'm actually ASE master certified auto mechanic. I have switched careers and now I'm a tool & die maker/CNC machinist.
