It sits in the lower part of a bilge area where water is prone to gather, that creates rust. I don't know if that much is normal but it's not going to rust away any time soon. I can't even see my flywheel when I remove the starter, hell I can't even see the starter until I get it out, don't know what mine looks like for comparison.

The fly wheel is bar metal and gust the moisture in the air will rust it out in no time. Looks ok to me

Ayuh,.... Pretty normal, the flywheel is plain ole cast iron, unpainted, of course it rusts in the bilge,...

The teeth on the Ring Gear look kinda beat up though,...

If the rust bothers ya, paint the flywheel when ya pull it to change the ring gear,...
Just don't get any paint, 'tween the ring gear, 'n flywheel, nor where the flywheel meets the crankshaft,...

I was just wondering if it was not right.

Any advice on when I put the new starter back in.

Re: is it suppose to look like this.

Others will totally disagree with me and call me all kinds of nasty names but I'll say it anyways since you asked.

What I did is I put in a second wire on the small terminal of the starter solenoid AT the starter motor. I very tidily ran this wire along the wiring harness, capped it off and tie-strapped it in an accessible location. This allows me to use this wire to remotely actuate the starter motor / bypass the ignition switch, kill switch, neutral safety if I really need to.

For instance, if I'm working on the motor and need to "bump" it over, or do a compression test, or jus want to test for B+ at the starter motor, or for some reason if I have a no-start situation and don't want to sit there and diagnose is it the ignition switch? Safety switch? Neutral switch? Trim switch???

There, I said it.

I agree the rust is fine but those teeth don't look like they are going to last much longer. I had a couple teeth break off mine this yr and hopefully you can fix it yourself as mine was $30 for the ring gear and $700 for labor.

Makonnen, that's no biggie. I do that with a wired remote starter. It has 2 alligator clips and a handle with a good sized button. All it does is complete a circuit. Use it to bring engine around to TDC or spin it to test compression without starting.

You have to be the craziest, stupidest, maddest SOB on the planet to do that!!! Do you know just how insane that is?!?!???!

Love it.. :D :D ... Going to do the same to my engine.

Me, I'm all about little 'diagnostic' lights... (yeah, and bling, bling...;)) Have a friend with an electric winch that's always playing up. Hooked two of those really small LEDs in a shiny chrome bezel to the appropriate lines inside and mounted them on the cover. Now he just looks at the lights and knows why the power's not there. Most of the time it's the plug at the back of the car, so he just gives it a wiggle and he's in business. Without the lights he was lost....

Chris....
EDIT: Almost forgot.... To the OP...most of the flywheels I've seen of late look just like that....

LOL actually here is what I really did:

I put a wire onto terminal A in the picture below in addition to the purple / yellow wire. This allows me to easily bypass the factory wiring power up the electric fuel pump, choke and ignition module if I really need to for whatever reason ie: diagnostic purposes. Also its non-intrusive in that it doesn't involve any cutting / splicing / modifying of any factory wiring. This is the point where that circuit (ign module, choke, f/pump) gets power while the engine is being cranked before the oil pressure switch turns on.

While doing that, I figure why not put a wire on terminal B as well. That allows me to directly jump the starter without using a giant screwdriver like the old days!

Then I ran out of brain cells for the day. :)

Now you just need to mount some mechanical gauges in the engine box and you're set..... Look mum, no hands....

Re: is it suppose to look like this.

Being able to bump the engine over is a great diagnostic tool and helpful for all those times the distributor accidentally falls out and ya gotta bring up #1 TDC with your finger on the spark plug hole. Careful them chest hairs don't get caught in a belt or something

Re: is it suppose to look like this.

So im the boat and I am removing seat parts to reach the area to put the starter in where it goes. Starter will be here tomorrow.

So i said to my self lets rotate the belt and check the rest of the fly wheel as i rotate it.

The problem is I can't move the belt much at all. Should I be able to move the the fly wheel by pulling on the belt and the pulleys.

Its just not moving at all, kinda worried something else may be wrong.

You should be able to move the engine with the belt, but it will be very difficult, especially with the spark plugs still in....

Thats very thorough of you but man, I'd rather now know!

You could put a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. Loosen the accessory belt and take a few spark plugs out would make it easier / less stress.

I can't tell if you're bugging me or serious!

Seriously though, I've always wanted to add a vacuum gauge in the engine compartment. Its a great way to "get to know" your engine - reading a vacuum guage that is.
