Is it worth it

I am currently running a 25hp 2 stroke merc. It works great with a light load but when there are three people and some gear I can't get up on plane. Would a 30hp 4 stroke make much of a difference?

It is a Princecraft Resorter.
length = 14'6", beam = 73", weight = 400lbs, max HP = 30

I doubt that another 5HP and 100# would improve things.

Verify that your engine is making full power, check for correct prop, rigging and weight distribution.

25HP should plane that boat unless there is an overload situation. Three adults could easily exceed 400#, let alone gear.

how big are the people. 3- 200 pounders gear and motor is probably over the weight limit on the boat.

Re: Is it worth it

I have the exact same boat with a (homemade) floor and casting deck. I have run 1980's-90's Johnson/Evinrudes from 15-30 hp on it. The short version is...25 hp is all you need. Better performance will be had by adjusting trim, prop or engine height.

My experience is that a 15 hp only planes a single +200 lbs man. The 20 hp struggles a bit to put two +200 lbs guys on plane. The 25 hp had a little more hole shot and top speed than the 20 hp, but it also had a higher pitch prop than the 20 hp. The 30 hp I currently run on it using the same cupped prop I purchased for the 20 hp gets two guys on plane quickly and performs great. Add a third guy and performance drops significantly. I also have to change the trim if I carry three.

Also consider that a 30 hp 4 stroke will add a lot more weight and probably eat up any performance advantage. What you can take from my experience with that boat and 2 strokes is that either the 25 or 30 hp are fine. Probably won't see much difference between them. If you want to improve your performance trying trimming your motor differently when you carry three, try a lower pitch prop or even try adjusting the engine height.

I don't know the weight limits off the top of my head, but I think the boat is rated for 800-900 lbs gear + passengers and 400-500 lbs or 3-4 passengers. The weight of the boat alone is around 300 lbs. What max cap is the 400 lbs you noted? Also my capacities are the more stringent Transport Canada numbers not USCG.

The four stroke will probably perform worse since it lacks the torque of the two stroke engine.

Four stroke: One power pulse per cylinder every TWO revolutions

Two Stroke: One power pulse per cylinder EVERY revolution.

That is why on the large four stroke Mercury Verado engines, they supercharge them.

Re: Is it worth it

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not that familiar with the 4 strokes and wasn't sure if there was enough difference in hp to be beneficial even with the extra weight of the engine.

The 400lbs is the weight of the boat. The weight capacity is 1035lbs (transport canada). I couldn't be happier with the performance of the 25 with 1 or 2, but I also use the boat to access a camp that is boat accessible only. This makes for a long haul when loaded up.

Thanks

Although at times a bigger boat would be nice this is the perfect boat for me - one boat different uses. It would just be nice to have the extra horses those times that I need them.

i have a 1986 28SPL johnson and a 1998 30hp honda. performance between them is insignificant. less noise and better trolling-4 stroke. less maintence, less weight -premix 2 stroke. that's the only difference i can see.

Nice setup. I see the 16' model gets you up to 40hp, but if your setup meets your needs 90% of the time why bother?

Your boat must be a newer model than mine.

Try trimming and a lower pitch prop. It will make a big difference. I put a cupped prop by Rascal (Turning Point) on my old 20 hp. It performed much better than the original prop in the same pitch and diameter. I now use that same prop on my 30 hp. Works great.
