I am running a 87 3.0 alpha one gen one. When I pulled my out drive for winterizing, I popped the upper cap. One of the bolt heads broke flush so I had to have it drilled and easy out. My buddy offered to do it and ended up drilling off center. He hammered the easy out in and cracked the aluminum about 1/8 of the way down on the thinner side. My question is should i take it to a machine shop and have it welded milled and re tapped? Or am i SOL?

Thanks for any advise
Tim.

Without seeing what your looking at we would have trouble providing an opinion, suggest pics.

A good machinist can fix that but the bad part is that aluminum chunks are going into your drive. It's a slippery slope! If he could do it horizontal ... maybe..

If I take it to a shop they want a bare case. Is it tough to strip a case then put back together?

Nope, dead easy. But you need the special tool to remove the cover on the front of the housing...

Spanner Nut Wrench for Mercruiser 91-17256 91-36235, GLM 90100 - Sierra 18-9803 - iboats

You also need the manual, and NOT a seloc or clymer. Use the proper manual.. Click HERE.

As long as you don't change anything, or remove the nut from the drive gear you shouldn't need to re-do the shimming...
