Was there a couple weekends ago and it was slightly better... I wont be seeing that lake any more this year. too many jetfleas and cabin cruisers for my taste... I'll be driving to hartwell or Oconee
Lanier isn't nearly as bad as it was at the end of last summer. It's still kind of dicey dropping off at some of the ramps though and you can pretty much forget finding one with an operating courtesy dock. (Although when driving the boat to meet someone at one of the ramps with a dock on dry land, it never gets old to tell them to wait at the dock and you'll pick them up )
ddennis has the right idea though. Hartwell is beatiful right now. It's not terribly low and gas prices are keeping people off the lake. The only boats I see out there lately are pontoons and bass boats. Too bad most of my family lives right off of Lanier.
Probably has to do with Lake Lanier not belonging to Georgia, but rather the Army Corps of Engineers, and agreements with Alabama and Florida for definite amounts of water releases down the Chattahoochee River. Despite the rain we have had (and it has only really been "average"), it has been insufficient to re-charge the lake given the water releases. Other lakes in the area such as Allatoona don't have these release agreements, and thus are at full pool right now. The good news is that early summer outlooks show that North GA should have normal to above-normal rainfall throughout the summer, so at least the situation won't get any worse than it was last year. The lake level is expected to fall about 3-4 feet before the end of the year, so unless we get a major weather event (i.e. hurricane), the net gain to the lake level may be about a foot for the entire year.
I would disagree with some of that eavega; I live near Allatoona and that is the lake I boat on. They do have agreements with Alabama, the difference is, the lakes that Allatoona feeds downstream in Alabama are all full so they don't have to release as much from Allatoona. Also, Allatoona doesn't have near the usage strain on it that Lanier does.
