ok............so it took me a month...but I finally have the head off the motor cause I plan on bringing it to the shop tommorrow. Now I have to ask.is there anything I should be looking for now that the head is off????...............There doesn't seem to be any scaring on the cylinder wall's, but the piston's do seem pretty carboned. They are very rough and very black. Should I take a piece of emery cloth to them???? Oh, and I bought a new head gasket, but the old one kind of fell apart as I was taking it off.......there are what I can only describe as orange scraps of paper stuck to the head and to the block......I got the worse of them off.....should i sand the rest of it off???? I'm guessing yes.<br /><br />Oh and for the record.........even though I don't recomend using it for the same reasons the experts warned me about it......that loctite stuff that I used on the spark plug worked fine for the last month, and I have a feeling would have worked forever..........I just feel safer with a helicoil.<br /><br />thanx for the help guys

update....................<br />the marina just called, and they told me that somebody had already installed a helicoil in my head........I guess that explains why when my friend took the plug out, he found no threads...must have detroyed the helicoil....anyway, the mechanic is now looking into options...........is there anything you fine people can suggest??? shuold I buy a new head..the mechanic thinks that maybe I could put in a bigger plug, he is going to check to make sure.

another update...................<br /><br />ok..............head is on..the marina put on what sounds to me something like a time-sert. cost $40.00 canadian just for the part....seems a little high. I sanded off the old gasket off the head and the block, and also sanded off all the carbon that was built up on the piston's. I wiped out the cylinders with a rag, and then applied a light coating of oil mix. put everything back together and did a compression check. compression used to be 120, 118, 118, and now is 110, 114, 114....not sure why it went down, but I think it is still good enough. re-installed plugs (they all went in smooth ), put on the muff's, primed her, and she started right up......seemed to run a little rough for the first few seconds.....but smoothed right out and now she sounds great. I plan on putting her in the water tommorrow. <br /><br />So.my question is..did I forget anything???.......would I be safe to go out tommorrow???? And why did my compression go down??? thanx again for taking the time to respond........I love this forum.<br /><br />Dale

Retorque the head after your first run. It'll need it. The compression went down either because the battery went down a bit, or because the oil you wiped the cylinders with got consumed. Probably the oil was the reason.

Hello, I suggest using anti-seize on the spark plug threads when you install them. This will keep the aluminum from coming out with the steal threads on the plugs the next time they are removed. Also always wait until the motor has cooled down before removing the plugs.

thankyou for your replies..both very good suggestions......I will let you know how it goes tommorrow. SHould I have oiled the cylinders then??? I thought it might be a good idea to lube it up a bit before starting the engine.

Learned this in my long ago hot-rodding days. <br />The threads and the seat of a spark plug must have good contact with the metal if the head.This is necesary because that is the path that allows heat to be carried away from the plug. If anything disrupts this heat exchange, like putting some glue in there to keep the plug from popping out, the plug will run much hotter and could bring other evils on like short plug life or detonation. <br />Helicoil is the answer.<br />Charlie

ok.re-torqued the head bolts..........engine has been running pretty good the last couple of days......I still think it should be faster. Giving the carb a good cleaning will be my next project.<br /><br />thanx again for all the tips guys
