I have recently purchased a 1985 17.6ft McKee Craft CC, and I got a really good deal on it so I expected to do a little work. It sat covered for 8 years, so the center console had to come apart for me to gain access to the fuel tank.
I Replaced the steering cable and engine control
cables as they had seized up. The wiring was done with crimp connectors, so I will be rewiring it with solder & heat shrink.
I am an older experienced auto mechanic and this is my first boat. I guess my question is what type of foam is used between the hull and the deck? did McKee Craft in 1985 use the type that would not absorb water? There have been quite a few accesories bolted down to the deck and I'm sure water has gotten where it will be hard to remove.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to cut a 6 inch dia hole in the deck under the console and remove a foam plug as to create a cylinder shaped hole in the foam from the deck to the hull and install an automatic bilge pump, then cut an 8inch disk from 10GA stainless and drill holes in it, install neoprene grommits for the wiring and water discharge hose. Then screw it down over the hole sealing all with 3M 5200.
I am pretty sure there is some water between the deck and the hull, it would make my day if someone has redecked one of these and can give me some insider info..
I humbly beg for your wisdom O Salty Wizards of the waves..
