Re: is my bayliner 5.0L a vortec or not

i dont know how to tell can someone shed some light on this for me?

What year is the boat?

Also, does the intake manifold have 12 bolts (six per side) or eight bolts (four per side - Vortec) securing it to the heads.

Finally, the only sure way is to go by casting numbers on the block + heads (since putting Vortec heads on a pre-Vortec block is fairly common).

Usually Vortec small blocks will have "Vortec" inscribed on the intake manifold. If not, do what was previously stated and run the block #'s

its a 1988

Then most likely not, unless its had engine work.

A serial number would be helpful, but you really need to get the casting numbers off the heads (take a valve cover off, look around and you'll quickly spot the casting number) and for the block the casting number is at various places like stamped on the front several places. I usually peek down one side near the block drain towards the oil pan and get the three digit code (mine, for example is "880").

Let us know what you find. Are you planning on doing some engine work?

Moved this to I/O and Engine stuff. We try to keep the Boat Topics section free of engine discussions :)

No was not a Vortec from the factory. Vortecs didn't exist in the V8 until 1996.

And counting the intake manifold bolts is the easiest way to tell. 4 per side, and at a straight up and down orientation to the heads. Not angled.

What you will have though is the engine made from 1987-1995, where the center two intake manifold bolts are at a 72 degree angle, as opposed to the others' "90 degree" angle. That means the intake manifold is different from all other small block Chevies made from 1955-1986.

Ayuh,.... Tilliam nailed it,.... It's too Old if it's original....
It's probably the 200hp, 2bbl. carb motor, or maybe the 230hp, 4bbl. motor...

Yep. 1988 was way to early for the V-8 vortec...

What are you planning to do to the engine, or were you just curious for the future???

As mentioned, just count the bolts on the intake manifold.
