Is my boat going to die? Or is the marina trying to screw me?

When the out drive is lifted upward with force, you can see a gap between the back of the boat and the out drive maybe a sixteenth of an inch. Mechanic number two said this is from the wood softening....I thought maybe to bolts were just loose.
Just what i was thinking. Jas...

I don't. You have a beautiful boat and I don't think you have much damage in the transom, or the floor:) Like said, do it right the first time and gedor right!

Ok, I have a 1995 20' Regal Valenti 202 SE with a 5.0 and volvo penta sx outdive. I took it into the marina where i Purchased it a few years back to have the "spring special" done.

i must say i saw transoms and outdrives in a way more bad condition and the boats were running. it all sounds strange to me. in every case of course you should not be able to move the outdrive forcing it by hand .

Nice work. I wish I had the resources you do to take this on myself. The cool thing is that I do not have any wet shavings, all dry in all areas. There is a very small amount of water coming in when the boat is in the water from the top right area of the transom plate on the outside of the boat. (same area that a gap 1/16th of on a inch can be seen when pulling up on the outdrive. No flex or cracking on the outside or inside of the boat though. Even when I took it on the water and hit the throttle and took the boat up to 55mph, my cousin was in the dog house watching and saw nothing, and no more water coming in than it was when it was just sitting in the water. Once the engine is out I will go take some pics and post. Again, it will be about a 3 weeks before this can be done as it is being done as a favor.

The transom may be soft from the top right corner area of the transom plate down to the bottom depending how long it was leaking.
Easy fix just a pain taking the motor and the drive out.

Well guys, the transom was rotten. I have since had it replaced and it is not brand new. No damage to stringers and all is well now. Except for one thing lol. Now my engine will not start. Not sure if I should post a new topic or just continue this one.

Best to start a new thread, and start it over in the Volvo engine repair forum.

Re: Is my boat going to die? Or is the marina trying to screw me?

I too have a 1992 nitro bass boat, my first boat. i purchased it 2 years ago and didnt know squat about boats. i took an experienced friend with me to check it out. my bud did compression checks on the motor ,checked the lower unit oil and the like, none of which i understood at the time. as for the transom he did the wiggle test and the hammer knock test which has been described here. now 2 years after i purchased the boat and had it out about 6 times , i find a rotten spot in the transom. i do not know the extent of the damage on mine either but as stated in this thread it is very very common. i was so depressed when i found out that i felt like giving myself a viking funeral but i found a product called seacast. check this product out, i thinking of doing the job my self and i dont know sh%#@ from shinola, but there are step by step videos and instructions on theyre web site and in iboats forums. iwas quoted a price of 2500 to 4000 to replace transom. i found a guy who will do it with seacast for 800 and i buy my own seacast about 255.00 for 5 gallons total. i called around for weeks until i found this guy who works at a marine shop by day and does side jobs at his house, these guys can be found you just have to look. good luck my boating brother!

Just one more reason why I like aluminum boats. Very little wood.
