I have attached pictures of my clutch dog. It shows some wear and rounding of the edges, but is it worn to the point I should be concerned? Or is it only broke in?:)

If it was jumping out of gear both the dog and gear are bad. The shift linkage may also have some slop in it..

This is from a motor that is new to me, so I have not run it. The gears looked good, but I have the slight wear on the clutch dog. I just don't know how much wear is ok.

It takes surprisingly little wear to cause it to jump out of gear. Hard to tell by looking, especially at pictures, but I'd say yours is at that point, or will be soon. Most people are in denial when it comes to the gear. Sometimes they can be reused, often not. Putting a new dog with a worn gear may last awhile, but will wear quickly. As boobie said, the shift linkage is ofen damaged by the forces of being kicked out of gear from below. Grab hold of the shift rod and see if there is any up and down slop in it. There shouldn't be any.

I would call them 'ready to change', but need a pick of the matching gears as well.

It looks pretty bad to me. I've had motors jump out of gear with less wear than that. The early '60s models 10 hp were famous for wearing out clutch dogs albeit after 50+ years. You might be able to get away with flipping it around, but it may be better to get a new one if you can afford it, but be ready, they aren't the cheapest part ($100+) :/

Judicious work with a Dremel can give them a new lease of life.Be sure to redress both the dog and the gear though.Just doing one or the other won't last.

I just talked to a machinist friend of mine who said he can tig weld the worn metal back in and remachine the engaging surfaces to new condition. Sounds cool. Anyone ever try this?

He did say that the clutch dog would need replaced, as it is a softer alloy than the gear and could not be repaired.

Remember that that small surface is what is 'transferring' all of your 18 horse power to the prop!! If you believe that would hold on, go ahead. However I'm afraid you might end up in the line of people that have already tried that short-cut without any lasting success.

I took pics of the gears as requested. They look pretty good to me. Very little wear on the forward gear, and less on the reverse gear. I am just trying to get a feel for how bad is bad.

Forward gear looks 'better' than the dog, but still bad!! Instead of welding, I would have asked your 'machinist' friend to grind them both and not add welding. However be careful with the wheel due to the hardening. Best if he may grind them with about 5 degr negative cut which will increase the engagement, but on the other hand make it slightly harder shifting to neutral.

fwiw...going through the same thing with a 71 25 hp.....local dealer, 50+ years, told me this < backs up what Haffiman says, though he surely doesn't my endorsement >...in the past the return rate on the weld and grind repair was about 50%....they now farm it out to a machinist who cuts both the dog and gear with a laser and , so far, no returns, tho' they've been doing this for only 2 years or so. Anyway, I left them with the dog and fwd gear..charge for doing both is $110 total. Will post back on repair, though I don't plan on keeping the motor long enough to give a long term assesment.

I don't know if my buddy has a laser, but I will mention the idea to him and see what he thinks. He used to work at a marina repairing outboards, so he is familiar with the problem. Since he will likely be doing this for free, I think it is a worthwhile experiment. (Can't hurt, might help.)

I love the idea of using lasers to keep these 50 + year old motors going :) I also had a mechanic also the grinding/back cut trick on a clutch dog for a 10 hp, and it worked pretty well. Fwd was nice and strong, but reverse would still slip occasionally. It's amazing how 1/8" of worn material can make such a big difference. It seems like some one could make/reissue dogs for these old gems relatively inexpensively, but everywhere I've looked has them priced $100 + :/ Keep us posted!

At least if the weld fix fails, then grinding the area out is still an option.

All this farting around with maybe fixes assumes your labor is valueless. If the laser cut works, why mess with half *****ed fixes. Some of you may have way too much time on your hands. When I fix something, I don't want to ever revisit the same issue any time soon.

I'll bet you could save money by getting parts made of pressed horse dung too.

I recently bought a new clutch dog for a 1968 Fastwin for $35 from a guy on the AOMCI website. I always have good luck finding what I need by posting a want-ad in their classifieds. BTW, the dealer wanted $73 for a new one.

I have a network of friends through the AOMCI. Between us we have hundreds upon hundreds of parts motors. Im probably close to around 100 motors myself now. Whenever someone needs a part, one of us will have it to donate. What comes around goes around. I think its crazy what some guys charge for these parts.

Amen. Especially when you consider you can often get a complete running motor for as much as some parts. I'm in that predicament right now. I have an old FD-19 I'd like to get running and sell, but it needs gears :/ I've priced a complete set online, but it's just barely worth doing at the prices I've seen for complete gear sets. I'd like to find a complete, interchangeable LU and just bolt it on there, but no luck finding one yet. Who knows, may be I'll make my fortune in the vintage OMC, clutch dog re-issung business :)
