kfa have you tried the webvertize on aomci.org? There are plenty of AOMCI members in florida with FDs laying around. Not sure where you are exactly, but I think I heard FR mention a meet in the near future.

All this farting around with maybe fixes assumes your labor is valueless. If the laser cut works, why mess with half *****ed fixes. Some of you may have way too much time on your hands. When I fix something, I don't want to ever revisit the same issue any time soon.

I'll bet you could save money by getting parts made of pressed horse dung too.

If pressed horse dung works, I would be happy to give it a whirl.

If my buddy can fix the problem his way, and save me $100 for the machining, besides the time involved in finding a shop in my area, I am a happy guy. :)

If the fix fails, and I am forced to pull the lower unit back off and send it to the laser shop, it will take me thirty minuted to pull the lower unit and break it down, which I figure is about $200 an hour for my time. (Slightly higher than my current wage, though I am entertaining offers.):D

If I didn't have a machinist for a friend, I would probably just pony up the $100 and let the laser guy do his thing.

1971, 25 hp....new parts...clutch dog and shifter cradle..$134... rev gear..$252....fwd gear and bearing...$310...or just purchase kit #0390974 which includes all listed parts + additional bearings ..$718...you're there might as well replace the pinion..$250... let's just say if the machining doesn't work I'll consider it a lesson learned and start searching for a known good lower unit in the $300 range

wrap up post...machinist no longer works at "laser" shop...he did however take it in and repaired both dog and gear with "weld and machine" method...repair looked good...installed both, sealed the lower unit back up...adjusted shift linkage...got on the lake Friday and it ran flawlessly...it was jumping out of gear at 1/4 throttle prior to repair ....repair cost to dog and gear was $96..

One other factor to look at, when your motor jumps out of gear and that's shift rod adjustments and wear on the shift cradle, where it sits in the clutch dog. You want less than .010 gap, between the shift cradle and the side of the clutch dog. If your shift cradle is badly worn on the forward gear side, repairing the tips on the clutch dog will be a short lived success. The less slop, the better, on these pieces. Also, while you have things apart, make sure there isn't an ounce of slop, in your shift linkage. Take hold of the upper shift rod, with a pair of long nose pliers and see if there is any up and down play in it. It should be dead solid. If you find up and down play in the shift rod, then you'll probably find a loose bolt on the bellcrank, or badly worn shift rod connection at the bellcrank. These two problems often go hand in hand and one causes the other. A bad clutch dog often causes shift linkage to loosen up and loose shift linkage often times will cause clutch dogs to pop it out of gear. Once you get things fixed up and put back together, then you'll want to check your shifter adjustment and make sure that it is disengaging the gears perfectly centered at the neutral position. A shift linkage that is out of adjustment, will also lead to the issues of the clutch dog jumping out of gear and lead to sloppy shift linkage. So, you have three factors here that work hand in hand to create a problem.

Yep, F_R gave me a good insight on this issue and he is right.
