I have a 1992 40 HP Mercury four cylinder that quit on me. I had a trusted mechanic do a compression test and it came out 110, 95, 125 and 115. He said the engine is not worth rebuilding. He also found a leak in the oil line so it more than likely ran without oil being injected. I have this engine on an old but pretty nice BassTracker. What are my options? What is the cost of a rebuild or should I junk the entire boat or try to find another motor to go on it?<br /><br />Thanks in advance for the help. :confused: :(

If it quit oiling and siezed, I don't think you'd get the comp #'s you have.<br />I can see galded cyl. walls and pistons though, and possibly crank and rod problems.<br />The only way to know is tear it down and inspect.<br />Cost???? Well..that will depend on whether you or your Mechanic does it, and what the findings are.

Don't you have an oil alarm ? I thought this was the only safeguard for oil injected motors ?<br />Does it still run ?

It does still run but it is very difficult to get it started and it will not remain running for long. The oil alarm on this unit only activates if the float switch in the oil tank activated it. It has a seperate overheat alarm but I do not think the engine ever overheated. Always had a good stream of water coming out the pee hole.

The 44 cu. in. merc is all most bullet proof there is a good chance you can get away with deglazing and a set of rings the motor will run well with a lot of taper and out of round we ran them in rental and put some back the gather that were real bad, you would not dare do on a customers engine and they still would run a couple of more seasons in rental, trouble free,I guess they are the toughest and may be the best outboard ever built
