I could'nt bring up the photo, but a blown piston, and cracked cylinder would be very exspensive on that engine. Add on a hydro-electric gearcase, and battery CD ignition, a different engine come's to mind.

That is not good on the engine you are dealing with.

Its repairable, but, will it be cost senseable. For what it would cost to rebuild that 71 engine. You can likely buy a good used for half the price. To do it right you need to put 4 new pistons at about 120 a piece, then berings and gasket sets, the big problem is the cyl.wall has delaminated and they are about 150 plus the machine work.I would look for a newer used in good condition.if you can get one with just fresh water use ,all the better.

anyone have any idea's on where to get it re-sleeved? could an auto machine shop do it?I'm going to rebuild it for family reasons. will a new sleeve fix the crack around the wall? I'm trying to rebuild to last a few more yrs runs well even with a bad piston:D

There's only a few shops that do re-sleeving (forget having an auto shop do the work ... they won't have a clue ... kind of like going to a podiatrist for brain surgery). Same with the other machine work. Use a shop that does this regularly. I would suggest Mar-Fab <www.mar-fab.com/>. Your probably looking at bore 3 and sleeving one, pistons, rings, soft parts plus whatever else they find. I would expect a price between $1200 and 2500 depending on what's found, plus removal and installation (I assume by you), and shipping both ways. Your core may be NG ... hard to tell with the separation between the casting and sleeve what's really going on there.

I'd also suggest Mar-Fab. Be sure to talk to Kurt. If you show him that pic I'll bet he can tell you just about exactly what it'll cost. Getting a sleeve is easy. Getting the pistons may be an issue.
