is my motor supposed to be standard or reverse rotation

i bought a 28' silverton it has a single 454 and a v drive for the trans. i disassembled the motor and it has been rebuilt before. it has a large cam gear to a single crank gear . this is reverse rotation. my question is that with someone being in the motor, probably more than once is it supposed to be reverse rotation or standard rotation. the starter mounts on top of the bellhousing. any help would be greatly appreciated as i am ordering parts .
also is it possible to convert the rotation to foward if needed be. i have all the pieces i need, cam, starter, timing set. or would this not work,

Normally the single engine boats use standard rotation, But if silverton didn't build enough twin boats that normally have one std, on reverse engine, then the probably used it in a single engine just to use their stock on hand.

that is what i have always heard as well. is that single engines were standard rotation. again i am not sure. i do know i need to find out as i have the motor out and am in the process of rebuilding it at the moment. i ordered all the pieces for a standard rotation motor , but now the came is opposite when comparing them side by side. the lobes do not match form th enew cam and the one i took out . i would rather go standard rotation if possible.

is there a way to tell being it has a v drive. the front of the motor faces the transome . i am sure it probably is a reverse rotation, but just want to make sure before i install it in the boat ,

Depending on the transmission, its not going to like being driven in the opposite direction. Its got oil pumps and clutches that only work in one direction. Your talking big bucks to switch it to standard rotation.
Get your self the correct RR cam, waterpump and starter. I'm sure someone else will chime in on this but i belive everything else is the same.

so i would need to do is find out if the trans is left or right rotation. i would imagine that there is a code on it somewhere. to tell m ethat info. any ideas?

If you pulled the RR engine out of that boat i would assume the transmission is RR aswell...

Most standard rotation engines are use a timing chain ,reversed rotations were gear driven ,no chain.Just remember that with aft mounted starters vs engine mounted, the correct starter will have the opposite rotation.
