The thrust holder behind the prop was corroded on and the top was falling apart. I eventually go it off, but it took some doing. I fear the prop shaft took a little collatoral damage. The new thrust holder seems to fit on ok. This picture of of the worst part. Shaft ok or should I replace it?

What make/model? I would change it so that you don't get the new prop thrust bushing jammed. But even if you don't it should work OK.

It's an 8HP Tohatsu, MFS8A3. If the only danger is that I'll have to cut the thrust holder off again, I can probably replace a dozen of them for what it would cost to get the shaft replaced.

If the shaft is not bent, with a dremel, flat out all damaged spline area as seen on pic, grease well shaft before placing prop back in.

I don't think the shaft is twisted. If it was twisted you would be replaceing alot of parts. Just as
Sea Rider says clean up the shaft and go boating.

Re: Is my prop shaft toast?

The damage is mostly from my initial attempts to get the thrust holder off with a hacksaw and a punch. If I were doing it again I would be able to do it a lot faster and with little damage to the shaft.

I don't see how the shaft could be twisted, so that the splines are running in a spiral rather than straight. So maybe twisted just meant bent? I don't think it's bent. It would be easier to tell if the whole shaft was out, but I don't have the tools to do that.

The new thrust holder seems to slide on and off just fine.
