The damage is mostly from my initial attempts to get the thrust holder off with a hacksaw and a punch. If I were doing it again I would be able to do it a lot faster and with little damage to the shaft.
I don't see how the shaft could be twisted, so that the splines are running in a spiral rather than straight. So maybe twisted just meant bent? I don't think it's bent. It would be easier to tell if the whole shaft was out, but I don't have the tools to do that.
The new thrust holder seems to slide on and off just fine.
