Get it? Upholsterer? Coveri..... Oh boy. I dropped the party barge off at his place first of February. He's supposed to recover the entire thing except the sunpad and helm. I drove by there Saturday and discovered he hasn't touched it. I called this morning and asked for an ETA just to see what his response would be. I didn't mention that I'd seen the boat. He told me he'd have it done in about two weeks, which is fine if it's true. Is it? What say ye, iboaters?

Sure, if he actually starts working on it, a couple of weeks would be plenty of time. Now, about that "actually starts" part... ;)

True. An experienced shopcan get it done, easy. Last summer I had my canvas guy completely redesign my bimini and enclosure. All new frames and hardware, 2- piece bimini, and all new camper canvas and eisenglass. 3 days.

Okay. Just wanted to be sure he wasn't blowing sunshine up my skirt. I'd be in big trouble with the admiral if nice weather rolled around and the boat wasn't anywhere near done. He doesn't strike me as the type who would lie to me and I know he does good work, so I won't worry about it. Thanks fellas.

I always tell them I need it back by ..... an open ended appointment always goes to the back of the line.

We've been down that road before. When I needed the new sunpad I made the mistake of telling him "no hurry", which is clearly a relative concept LOL. When I dropped it off last time he promised me it would be ready by spring. You probably know him. It's Buddy's right there off Highway five.

A decent shop can do 3 "simple" or 2 complicated seats/seat pads in a day. If you get work done in the future, schedule it so that they start on it the day you bring it in. I always have people hold on to their stuff until I'm ready to work on it. That way, they know that it's being handled the day I get it. The exception would be if someone is doing repair work on their boat and then they give me a due date for the interior to be completed. 20+ years and never missed a deadline yet.

I made the same mistake last fall when I had my dock cover made. My poor boat sat uncovered in the rain and snow for 6 weeks until I dropped by and asked them to make sure it was covered until the work was done, I got the call to pick it up 3 days later.

Re: Is My Upholsterer Covering Up the Truth?

Thanks guys. This case is a little different I think. I dropped it off first of February with the understanding that it would be ready by spring. If he has it done in two or even three weeks he will have honored that commitment. That's a deadline in my mind, so if we go past three weeks a conversation will be had. It's been sitting uncovered on his lot all winter, but that's because the cover was ripped by a heavy snow before I took it in (he's fixing the cover too), so it wouldn't have fared any better at my house. All the upholstery was already shot except for the sunpad, and it's covered by the bimini, which is tucked away in its boot. So, as far as I'm concerned it's just been one less thing in the way. Our last encounter went like this.

Me: "My sunpad blew off and I need a new one. I'm not in a huge hurry".
Buddy: "Okay, we'll get you fixed up."

Four weeks later on the day I'm supposed to take the barge down to Texas for a weekend with my brother's family;

Me: "How we lookin, Buddy?"
Buddy: "Should have you done in a day or two."

I fussed at him and he got it done pronto and did a great job. When I went to pick it up I apologized because it was just as much my fault as his since I said "no hurry." I made the mistake of assuming we shared the same definition of "no hurry". Clearly we didn't. Lesson learned.

To me the "ready by Spring" was March 20, not June 21, the last day. As long as he has it back in your hands when you need her, you're good. And if he does good work and stands behind it.

Just need Fireman to move up here so I can start using him.

As I have experienced, when you don't set a specific date of completeion, it "never" gets done. My wife is like this on 98.5% of the projects that she starts.

In my shop's case: How much of a hurry the customer is in has a geometric effect on cost. If'n he want's it fixed yesterday? He's gonna pay tomorrows price!

What ticks me off is when folks say "no hurry", when what they really mean is "No! Hurry!". They drop stuff off and say no hurry, then call me in a day'n a half for a status update? Grrr ...

But then my local customers would complain! Can't make everyone happy. Drag your barge down here for vacation and I'll have it done in a couple of days!

I understand completely what you're saying. I hope I wasn't one of those types of customers to him last time. I left him alone for almost a month and even apologized for fussing at him. I still say four weeks for one sunpad exceeds the logical definition of "no hurry", but I also concede (and conceded to him) that I should have told him I would need it in time for my trip.

I wish! That would be one expensive upholstery job by the time I paid for the gas.:faint2: Maybe you just need a second location.

Yep he did a great job on my replacement Sunbrella bikini top at a very reasonable price. It just took 6 weeks instead of two because I said the same thing. Funny thing about it was he said he wasn't very busy so he would get right on it lol. I didn't care because I really was in no hurry but he set the original two week schedule. I would absolutely use him again because of the quality and price of his work.
