Re: Is My Upholsterer Covering Up the Truth?

I still say four weeks for one sunpad exceeds the logical definition of "no hurry"
It really doesn't have a logical definition, per se. More of a continuum ...

If a customer said, "No hurry"....I would take that to mean "Don't rush cause I don't have the money to pay for it right now, anyway".

I'm a "I need it done yesterday" kind of guy. Give a mechanic etc an open ended time frame....and you can be sure your job will get attention much later than sooner. JMO.

I wish! That would be one expensive upholstery job by the time I paid for the gas.:faint2:

I heard rumor that there are herds of mini giraffes roaming the swamps of central Florida... :llama::deadhorse::hungry: (Toon would hold lots of delicious carcases....)

Good point, and that's why you need to 'read' your customers. In general I don't take deposits for jobs. Complicates the paperwork & makes me think I have more money than I actually do ... My policy is cash or check upon delivery.

Oh great! Just what FL needs. Another invasive, non-native species.

I had not heard of said mini giraffes but cain't say it surprizes me.

Aren't the giraffes hooves a danger to sea cows ...?

I was originally just looking for someone to tell me whether what he said (two weeks) was plausible, but this has become a very informative thread. I appreciate the unique insight you craftsmen have given me.

One thing I've learned after goin' on 10 yrs in the business is that canvas/cushion folk can be a lil quirky at times. Me too I reckon, by proxy. Cut from a lil difrent cloth ...?

Update: So it's been three weeks since he said two weeks. I called him today to check in and he "was right in the middle of it and should be done this week or first of next". That's fine provided it's done close to then. We whall see. Thought I'd give y'all a chuckle.

Every time I see this thread title pop up in the forum list, I hear Jack Nicholson shouting "You can't HANDLE the truth!"

I sell real estate in the south. I tell people from up north when they buy a home here there are some differences. When a service provider says he "will have it done by Tuesday", ask which Tuesday of which month. One guy built shutters for a client and missed two appointments. When he arrived the 3rd appointed time he was asked if all was OK since he missed two..... his reply.. "had to drive inland it eas hog huntin weather there"...

Yep. We live in a different world down here for sure. Hey, on the bright side, this is the first time he's volunteered that he's actually working on it.:faint2:

Is thinking about working on it the same as actually working on it? Good luck!

Maybe working on it means he's thinking about what he needs to do.

No, that part didn't require any thought. All the upholstery was shot. Complete redo. Looking forard to seeing it. He does do good work.

Reminds me of the general contractor's standard answer in the Tom Hanks movie, "The Money Pit": "Three weeks; it'll be ready in three weeks."

On Mother's Day the admiral informed me we'd be taking the boat out this weekend and I'd better let the upholsterer know we'd be coming to get it this week. I called to warn him and he told me it was finished.:faint2: At that very moment he was putting the speakers back in. I've taken off this Friday so I can be sure she's ready for her first splash of the season. Woo Hoo!

Roger that! Let's hope for his sake it doesn't cost three times the quote. I didn't tell him we had been by to look at it Sunday afternoon. Looks great.
