You asked, I will say, IMO, it would be ugly but it is your boat.

If the engines obviously do go with th theme of the boat, by all means paint them. But, do it right. Cheap paint jobs on motors look terrible. And don't just paint. Use decals, striping, etc to get good accent. Also remember the paint has to withstand high temperatures.

Funny Story - a girl I know has a 15' open bow and recently had her OB painted charcoal. It looked great. A week later, it was bright green. We asked her why she painted it again and she said she didn't. The paint turned by itself. We told her the guy should repaint it. He did. Charcoal again. A week later, back to green. She gave up and left it green.

Personally I think painting the engine any color that isn't believable as original will look tacky...... Folks with high zoot custom boats with high dollar paint jobs can paint their engines and get away with it..... Folks like the rest of us just putting old stuff together and fixing it up need to be much more subtle.... I REALLY think that the graphics cut in an original johnson pattern or a custom johnson logo in a matching color would look much more classy. IMHO Would be the difference between 90% of folks thinking it was a nice touch vs 30% loving it and 70% hating it. I think you could be closer to pulling it off if the engine was the same year as the boat. although I still like white with matching graphics even then

Now that I think about it, we COULD all be wrong..... Maybe the best bet would be to take a pic and photochop it with various schemes

Now that is a good idea. But of course posting them here would be a lot of fun, but maybe spooky too. I have a motor which has some corrosion and faded paint. Being the kicker I am going to paint it, so I will be watching and considering about that. Brand name stickers and such, I believe help, no matter the color choice.

How difficult is it to paint an outboard and get good results?.... Seems like there are so many crevices and hidden places, pivoting parts, ect. that it would be hard to make it look professional.........

I definitely hate the johnson green, so I'd say paint it off-white and get a new factory decal set for it...

I just think, less is more sometimes. Being in home renovations, I apply this to my designs all the time. You want certain things to be a focus point. If it gets to busy its distracting and can be to much. Do you want the main focus to be on the boat or the motor. I think black or white with color accents to match the hull is the way to go.

A friend of mine has a 38' Intrepid express cruiser. The enron paint he has is a burnt orange. The triple outboard are painted the same burnt orand and white as the Intrepid. His color scheam is WOW! Makes it look complete. Go for it!
Chevy orange with a heaap of fleck in it is an awesome colour too. Mate's painting the sump of his 454 that colour.

Yo get a really nice looking job you have to take it apart, I broke down the mount on mine and hung the engine itself from the rafters in the garage.

Plan on spending at least 8 hours on prep and that could be alot higher if you want to completely strip it but all the time comes back at the end in a much nicer job.

I had probably 10 hours prep and maybe 2 hours painting everything.

As far as color, it is your boat and you can do anything you want with it, if you want to paint it purple that is fine if that is what you want, we spend way too much time worrying about what other people will think, life is short, make yourself happy.

... in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think certain custom schemes look good - primarily with classics and go fast boats. At the end of the day, who care's what anyone else thinks - if it looks good to you, go for it. I like the idea of playing around in photoshop for a while to visualize it.

EDIT: Lovely stuff, but not suitable for iboats. Sorry, Frank.

SO: are these "tacky or in bad taste? As stated above, it is all in the eye of the beholder. By the way:These were taken from fine art by noted and acclaimed artists, not schlock
