Either one will work as a single. But yes, the one with a right hand rotation (forward gear) lower unit is considered to be the standard rotation in outboardland.

I have a left hand counter rev johnson on my boat with one engine it makes no difference which way it goes round.

I've read that if the steering wheel is on the starboard side of the boat, the driver's weight counteracts the tendency of the boat to lean to port because of the right-hand propeller rotation. Is this not really true in practice?
