Well then we are in complete agreement after all, nothing is perfect, but trends and truths do emerge from lots of inperfect data. :)

^And the trend I see is a slight advantage to the 4-stroke at WOT and a moderate advantage to the 2-stroke at low speed. Perfectly consistent with what you would expect based on the mechanics of the two engine designs. The 4-stroke operates at higher vacuum at idle and slow speed, resulting in higher pumping losses and lower efficiency. At WOT the 4-stroke pumping losses nearly disappear but 2-stroke still needs to use crankcase pressure to scavenge the cylinders, giving the 4-stroke the edge.

Both of these issues have possible solutions. Application of stratified charge direct injection to the 4-stroke would reduce or eliminate the need to throttle at low power, while a turbocharger could provide "free" external scavenging to the 2-stroke, although some type of belt or electrically driven air pump would still be needed for starting and low power operation. External scavenging would also enable the use of a non-consumptive oiling system.

Agree, but stratified charge stuff stil hasn't solved that issue for any other high volume Otto cycle engines. Cost, weight, space, and simplicity keep the 2 stroke solutions away as they are so close without them . . .

After reading all these posts I have come to the conclusion that.... I am unable to come to a conclusion.

I can say this.... After reading about 4 cycle outboards, it seems that the mainenance is more and more expensive.

Yeah that little 2 cyl johnson you've got on there will run forever anyway. Thats why you bought it right?

New 4 stroke to old 2 stroke...much better econ on the new 4 stroke.

New 4 stroke to new DI 2 stroke...similar econ, but slight edge to 4 stroke.

I've run them all and make a living off them, and this is my experience.

Maintenance on the 4's isn't near as bad as the 2 stroke fans make you think.

When you run a lot of hours, the 4 strokes are cheaper to operate and maintain. Saving on the 2 stroke oil is huge.
