No one ever complained of having too much power

Maybe, but plenty of people complain about poor fuel consumption, and too much extra weight in the ***....

So far as cats, I think it is a matter of time after folks start having trouble a solution will be found. Look at the diesel industry side, they found ways to bypass and remove cats.

Might complain about pour fuel consumption, but I don't see complaining about extra weight **.. in any location with plenty of displacement. When you have plenty of horse power to the weight being carried, weight become irrelevant other then at refuel time. Without sufficient HP weight is a constant concern

Thats true but do you want to be one of the early adopters that will have to figure it out?

I have an old boat, no cats, nor do I plan to buy one with any time soon. If your going to buy new boat, you get cats.

I have to agree with this, in the 90's my parents had a real nice 19ft with a 4.3L and it was a ski boat machine compared to all our friends with 5.0L and 5.7L, granted we were going skiing with 3-4 people max but something to be said for a good power to weight ratio.

At the 2014 NYC boat show, I popped the engine hatch on a dozen + boats and it was a tossup, we are in a changeover period currently as agallant80 said.
I'd definately go no cats if given an option.

My boat is an 03 and MPI came out in 02 so wasn't being selected as an option as it was a lot more than 2k more back then. Here is what I don't like about the carb. When I back into a busy ramp, the engine insists I warm it up for a few minutes before I back away from the dock. It's been that way since it was new. It old school like my 70's/80's cars back in the day. It really annoys me. There is a top speed difference as well with the 30 less hp of the carb variety on my boat. Call me crazy but I am certain I read that manufacturers get to build a small run of non-cats each year. I'd check that out if I were in your shoes. As for the run on issue, you can mask the problem by using 89 octane or higher. Run on is bad for engines and masking it isn't fixing it but it is what it is. End of the day, I will never buy another carb boat especially a new boat.

Mine has done that (3.0L) especially when doing alot of skiing with start/ stop. I think some call it "Dieseling". I've learned to just let it idle a moment more when slowing down before I shut off the ignition and it seems to fix my problem.

Before I started using 89 octane to mask my run on, I would just let it idle a minute as well. I've accidently topped half of my 33 gallon sig boat gas tank with 87 octane that then mixed with the half that was 89 octane and even then it will diesel a little if I don't let it idle a few seconds after a hard run. I truly hate carbs and wished I'd searched a bit longer for the 270hp V8 option for my sig boat but was seeming impossible to get my hands on one. While MPI is now the rule, MPI v8's in 18 foot boats have seemingly disappeared from the options lists.

I think the USCG got stricter or the boat manufacturers were afraid of lawsuits. It seems the power for smaller boats is less now and the capacity too. My boat has the USCG label rating it for 12 people. The same boat a couple years later is rated for 10.
