Is the MotorGuide Stealth salt capable?

I have the manual, and in the back a warranty card with the model, serial number and purchase date. Model is SF300, purchase date 4/21/94. Wierd thing is, the Parts Guide for SF300 says Year of Intro is 1996 (http://www.reelschematic.com/motorguide/sf300.pdf)...so this I don't understand.

In the manual under Maintanence Tips section it says, "Always thoroughly rinse your unit with fresh water after use in salt water."

But, I've called a trolling motor parts place and they said trolling motors can be for salt and fresh water if it has a salt option or somthing. They said if it was designed for fresh, it should stay fresh.

I'd like to be sure this motor can handle salt water, and that it won't break it if I do put it in salt water. It would be good if the manual said "YES, your SF300 can be used in Salt or Fresh Water...go for it!" But it doesn't

Can anyone offer any confirmation or advice on this unit? Thanks.

From looking at the diagram, that aluminum column is in question. Depending on the makeup of the aluminum, salt will eat the aluminum up.

I wouldn't think that there would be columns with a different aluminum alloy. If this column is of the same alloy as an aluminum boat, it would be fine. You would have to know the chemical makeup of it. The thing that concerns me is that most anodes (sacrificial lambs for corrosion) are either made of some aluminum and or zinc. You have used it in fresh water and if you don't see any signs of corrosion, it may be fine in salt water. I would clean it good after each use. Also I'm a big believer in silicone sealant is a boat's best friend. You can seal around all cracks, bolts, threads etc. and keep them from rusting.
