Re: IS THE WELLCRAFT WORTH IT?

john troup,

Did you know that my first question on this web site was about a trophy 23 walk around with twin force 130s or a wellcraft v20 yammy 150.

funny thing.

after many replies - a test drive - a few actually.

I got the wellcraft - considering its a 86 hull. she is strong. takes waters well, I've hit my trailer, I've bounce off the docks and ran aground. She is tough. No problem. I need to invest in a keel guard. other than that, all her hinges, window, door, panel, instrumentation works fine.

I test drove the trophy too. it was nice, I cant say I had a problem with her. But I was kinda skeptic cause plenty of people on this forum warned me of those force. So did alot of my local boating buddies.

Hey, test drive the boats. You are paying for it. You migh as well get something you like.

Hey, John - I too am considering the Trophy vs. the Wellcraft 24 w/a. Haven't found many people to comment on the Wellcraft - though there's lots out there to bash the Trophys. However, it seems to me like the Trophy is a much better boat than it was a few years ago. They've upped the hull warranty from five to ten years. Have you made a decision yet?

Re: IS THE WELLCRAFT WORTH IT?

John,

I've owned a Wellcraft for three years now. She is a 1990 Sport 20 dual console walkthrough. I use it for fishing, skiing and just plain cruising. The boat is twelve years old and everything still works on it. I mean everything! Very well made and thought out - even for an older model boat. The hull can take a pounding - I've had it in 5 footers with everything out of the water and it is solid. Very stable also. I would buy a Wellcraft over a Trophy any day. I WILL buy another Wellcraft. Hope this helps.

Chris

Re: IS THE WELLCRAFT WORTH IT?

I would just like to clear up the quality issue if possible. Many people go on what there buddy has to say and not on opinion. That would be like not buying a chevy cause your friend says that the ford is better. There is a difference between boats at different price points. The biggest one that gets me is the sea ray and bayliner. Sea Ray has a percieved value that is so much higher than what that boat is really worth. I am not saying that it is a bad boat it is just very pricey for what you get. They use the exact same materials in the Sea Ray as they do in the Bayliner. If the Sea Ray is so great why is the Bayliner such a piece? There are a lot of boats out there and one should do his own research on materials and construction. I belive that the Sea Ray reputation may come from great servicing dealers. This should mean a lot to a boat buyer. Also please test ride before you buy if possible. On the water the boat may take on a whole new charachter

Re: IS THE WELLCRAFT WORTH IT?

John - I'm sure that by now you have bought a "whatever." For the rest of the folks who may have the same question, I have a 1988 23' Wellcraft center console. Best boat I've had in 30 years. If anything it is overbuilt. It is heavy though but when you are out there havin fun and it is rough, other folks are either getting their guts beat up or headed back to the ramp.

One suggestion in buying an older boat (and this is not limited to Wellcraft) be sure you check very thououghly for rot. The idiot who mounted the engines on mine did not seal everything up tight and I wound up with some serious transom rot a few years back. Nothing that $3,000 didn't cure. Guy did a great job and used a glass sandwich instead of plywood.

Off to the Florida Keys on Saturday to see how much gas I can pump through the motors.
