hello, ive a 80 ish mariner ,serial:60e s040954 and have been informed that these models ,at new wernt 4 h.p. ,but lower ,,any thoughts on this ,also can so-one throw some light on the year of this model,,thanks piperdog
It is a 1983 model, the seial number should read '6E0', not 60E.
HP is never exact. For example - A 4hp may be 3.8 or 4.2. A 50HP motor may be 45 or 55. Some motors are exactly the same but detuned (or up-tuned) to change the HP.
Whomever informed you that HP was lower was probably referring to the fact that HP used to be measured at the powerhead, and was changed to be measure at the prop around the mid-80s. That would have made about a 10% difference in prop HP.
The difference in real world performance was trivial. . .not worth mentioning.
