is ther a easy way to test coils?

hi<br />i have a 1976 70 hp johnson..it has lost power so.<br />i'm rebuilding my carbs but i would like to check my coils also as they have never been changed.<br />is there anyway to easily check them? <br />or do i need to take them off.<br />any help would be appreciated<br />thanks<br />Don

You can use a VOM and check the resistance of the primery and secondary windings. I don't know what those values should be they'd be in your shop manual. You can look for spark leaks/cracks by running it in the dark.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Yep, running it in the dark under load will show any leaks.

make sure your coil grounds are clean and tight as to your wires if you are brave with the motor running wet your hands and run them along the wires if they are bad you will get SHOCKED!!!! for about 23 bucks Canadian you can make up new wires 76 eh maybe worth the investment

You can also run the motor and spray Windex on the plug wires and coil bodies. Any small cracks will cause that cylinder to cut out when it gets wet. That is only a go-no go test as it only checks for hairline cracks.
