Hi,
Working on a '62 evinrude lark 40 hp.

I have seen conflicting stories on timing. Some say set points to .20 and thats it. Others say that there is a special tool for timing... I also have a 30 yr OMC mechanic that I got lucky and stumbled across and he says points are it.

I just want it to run smooth, clean and quiet. Anyone know if there is a timing procedure or if there is anyhing you can so to calm them down?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

There is and you need a timing fixture that will allow you to set timing to "exact" spec, F_R is the man to talk to. I just set them .020 to the highest point, but i'm sure it isn't as accurate as the fixture.

Yes, there is a procedure that uses a timing fixture(OMC special tool) but most people just set the points with a feeler gauge. The link below is from the FAQ's at the top of the Repair & MTC Forum. JB is one of the best and his procedures should help you get it done. FYI, you really need to perform a "link&sync" procedure to help insure the carb throttle valve opening is properly coordinated with the timing. You will probably need a service manual for that. I'll try to find a link for a manual and post it as an edit. Good luck with that great old motor!

EDIT: The link below will get you to a free, online public library that has non-factory service manuals in pdf format. Just LOGIN and drill down to "Outboard 35HP (1956-1964)".

BK is correct, if you want to set the points according to "the book" there is a timing fixture to do it. It not only gets them right on, but is easier and faster. He and your mechanic also are correct in that merely setting them to .020" is "good enough" if you get them accurate. If you check the actual gap after using the timing fixture, you will often find that they are not .020". That is the difference between doing it correctly and doing it "good enough". Here is the page from the book:

Having said all that, yes I am very familar with the procedure. It just so happens that I make the timing fixtures. But the forum rules say I can't sell them here.

Is it against the rules if I say that one may Private Message F_R and arrange a permanent, non-returnable loan of a new timing fixture?
