Is there a way to Service a 3cyl Merc trigger

I've figured out that the lack of spark in my '73 650 is caused by a bad trigger. How do the triggers work? Is it magnetic?<br />I know the books all say to replace a defective trigger, but they're hundreds of dollars from the dealer. Has anyone successfully repaired/rebuilt one? I've got two defecive ones here, so it doesn't matter if I screw up once. <br />Eric

Thats the cd distibutor model right ??? not to get off topic, but i was told you can't even get parts for those anymore.......true ?

The cap and rotor are NLA, but either the local Merc dealer has a NOS distributor housing with trigger or they're still available because they told me it'd be a couple hundred bucks for it. <br />Eric

I just junked a 1977 85HP..It's trigger assembly was close to five hundred dollars...I used to have to repair the things because the owners would try and pry the rotor off while tuning them up...The rotor and shaft are one and were in the hundred bucks range...They were a total pain and am I ever glad most of them are gone...

Eric, there is no feild repair for that trigger, maybe Rapair could fix it or maybe you could find a doner engine with a dist.m on it Bob

Alright, I guess I'll go get some from my friends back yard Merc pile and see if I can find one that works . <br />How do they work anyways? Is it magnetic?<br />Eric

I have a '77 85HP...and when I first got it I researched the cost of parts...to figure out if I wanted to pursue the restoration. Eric, what trigger works on magnetic flux that is fluxuated by the hole in the disc passing between two electrical windings

134-6452 sounds like the flywheel trigger...The belt driven trigger has the LED light (thats what I call it anyways) built into the body..There are four holes (for a 4 cyl) in a plate that passes under this light that "triggers" the module in the body to store high voltage in the switch box to fire the coil (or coils) at the correct time..The trigger body is pretty much a high tech made piece that is time oriented to build..Propaganda??...Probably....I stand corrected on this issue....It was a godsend when they finally put the trigger under the flywheel......Al...

Ok, who's right here? Is it magnetic or light activated? If it's light activiated it could be as simple as dust on the lens.<br />Eric

There is no light, if you doubt this statement take a trigger and hook it up to the box and ck for yourself.

k, so would they fail due to one of the magnetic coils failing? Or would the bottom one be a natural magnet? (I dont see power wires going to it)<br />I guess either way it would be impossible to get into it because it looks like the electronics are pressed or heated into the housing.<br />Thanks,<br />Eric
