A shop should also be able to weld one on fairly reasonably. Some shops dont even split the drive to weld them. Just fill them up with water.

LOL keep up guys...I just found a guy local today that will do it for me this winter. He is not a boat guy but an excellent local welder. I ordered a repalcement skeg and I will saw tooth cut it and give it to him to weld. Strissy or Hoytheld.....should I drop the foot for him? Or as you say should he fill it with water? This is good stuff I would have just told him to weld it on LOL.

Yeah, best idea is to just drop it. It will be easier for him to work on also, so maybe cheaper for you!

BRAIN FART, yeah dont need to drain the gear case oil...little late for me I guess.

So, the issue here is heat tranfer while welding? Won't you have the same issue if the case is drained of oil, but not filled with water?... water to carry off the heat?.. as opposed to the heat transferance of Aluminum?... seals, bearings, etc.?

good point....that aluminum will tranfer the heat...hot as f%#k and fast!!!

could weld little at a time....not all in one shot

Ok at the shop our welder did LOTS of skegs. Last night I was beat and for some reason I said to drain it...yeah IDK... So just drop the lower unit off it, weld it up, bolt it back on!

I am gonna just drop it I think.... I want to do this right and have not problems, my welder has done these before and has always done them with the leg off.

Hey, Hoy......just for sh..ts and grins take anher picture of the piece you took off......I made it last night for you but before I do the whole shipping thing I just want to know for my own piece of mind that it is correct. I did take into effect that it is the port side and it can go only one way !

Geee, just one month to get a 10 minute piece?

I'm not trying to be contentious here, but if you DIYS you would be done by now.
