Is there an easier way of removing brass collar for impeller replacement?

I went to replace the impeller on my 91 Force 35 HP and it was a bit of a bugger. That brass collar on top of the shaft holding the boot is really a bugger to take off.

Took me 30 minutes of tapping it out with a piece of wood and hammer and a bit of heating. What tricks do you guys use to get it off faster and easier?

If it's just as difficult getting it back on, I'm not looking forward to it at all.

Put the drive shaft loosely in a vise so the collar is resting on top of the jaws. Use a brass or aluminum drift so you don't bugger up the splines and hammer the shaft down. It will probably take all of 2 minutes.

To reinstall the collar use a piece of pipe or a deep socket that fits closely over the drive shaft and simply tap the collar down.

I'll try the pipe on the installation. Thank you for the tip.

To get it off, I use a cresent wrench, a big one.
Open it so it just clears.
Then put the wrench under the collar and tap with a hammer.
If it's that hard? Try a bit of sanding to remove the edge.

I didn't have any pipes around that fit but I did have some deep impact sockets. That coupled with a box-end wrench gave me enough to tap it it in with a hammer. It all worked out.

Thank you all for your helpful advice.
