Re: is this 470 statement true?

The question is: Is a 20+ year old boat a good first boat? Would I recommend a well maintained good running 470 over a poorly maintained 4.3?.....You bet I would. I would also make sure that they learned as much as possible about properly maintaining it. How many new boaters have gotten stuck with "cracked block" or "water in oil". I would say buy as new a boat as you can afford, and have it thoroughly checked out by a qualified technician, engine, outdrive and hull. Well got that off my chest:D

A good tech and a good surveyor will save you a whole lot more money than you'll spend for their services.

I personally don't like the 470, but thats just because of how rough they run. I don't like any engine that vibrates that much though. I honestly wish they were still using the old 165 inline six engine. Those things ran like a watch when tuned properly.

Mine runs silky smooth...

It was my first I/O boat but no were near my first experience with engines or boats. I am still very happy with my purchase.

Pros:
Fresh water cooling
Light weight
Fuel efficient
Easy winterizing ( i have a valve to drain the heat exchanger)
Cheap
No manifolds to replace.

Cons:
Problems with charging system (mine has Alternator conversion)
water pump problems
Problems if overheated (Head Gasket)
