Here is what you are looking for, both the dog and gears are subject to wear. This dog is extremely worn out--it must have been jumping long, long, long before the guy gave up and fixed it. Remember, every time it jumps, it damages the parts more. It can also damage the shift linkage between the shifter handle and lower unit. Partial fixes a waste of time and money.

The dog on the left is toast,.not much you can do about that. The gear on the left is quite worn too but not so bad as the dog.The gear on the right looks useable from here but it's hard o say from a photo.I have had some success with redressing the angles on the gear with my dremel.Quite a bit of metal to grind away but never had one fail yet touch wood.Of course replacement would be best but horrendously expensive, I guess it's your call. The gear on the right does not look too bad but I'd def replace the dog..
I'm sure I'll get yelled at here but hey,i'ts worked for me.

well here is what i did right or wrong so far, i used the gear from the old outboard johnson model rde-17 it seems to be a 1957 25 hp, i also used the dog from that motor, put it all back together and ran in barrel and all seemed fine.... now in a service manual from the fiftys they have a part number of 375379 for that gear but the part number for my motor is 381810 but both gear look the same any ideas what is the difference?
