Is this a deck or hull issue ?

Decided to get back on the boat and make templates for the deck before i did some more sanding . Hopefully the pictures are sized right --
If you can see in the picture the deck on port side where it would meet with the hull sits right at the top on a lip there.
The starboard side sits below the lip , where the angle is .

Using a level across the stringers , the stringers are perfectly level . Ive tried the boat on trailer , tried it on a blocked 3 point stance ( 2 at aft and one at bow ) And also tried on a cradle ( 3 supports full width = 1 at aft , 1 at abeam are i guess its called , and 1 at front area . the result is the same . From what i have read the deck doesn't need to be touching the inside of the hull 1/4 away is ok just use PB to fill it there . But shouldn't the deck but sitting in the same spot on both sides , either above the angle or below it ? I actually thought it should be where the inside hull is flat above the angles but now iam lost . Do i glass it in sitting where it sits , or decide if i need to look for a hull ?


The second picture is of the Transom from the back , so you can see the lines / angles it has .

On older hulls (even some new ones) it's very common to have the two sides different from each other, it was all just done by eye and faired quickly, plus the guy doing it coudn't see both sides at the same time.

If the hull is as level as you can get it, and the stringers are level, then it is what it is.

At least you'll know where your deck water is going to drain to.


I like your eye for and attention to detail (or maybe it's OCD like I have), a lot of folks wouldn't have even noticed that.

The rule of thumb for boat building is to go by measurement and not by level or plumb... you'll drive yourself crazy trying to get something level in a boat, and then it probably won't be right because something else was out of level or plumb.

If you feel the mismatch is important enough... or if it just bugs you, you can shim the starboard stringer up to even out the mismatch on the deck/hull.

Thank you .I feel better about it now. I mostly noticed it because when i set a small piece of wood there ,one side had about 1/4 space, the other was closer to 1/2 that would need to be filled with PB . I thought , oh a small angle cut on bottom side will get it closer and seen they were sitting in different spots .

Should i cut the edges of the deck at an angle ? If so would i want the top , or the bottom of the deck the wider part . If i use the angle as it runs now the top of the deck wood would be wider , but wouldn't that make a void on the underside as i cant fill it ?

I wouldn't worry about it. Fill the gap with PB and tab it to the hull. That'll be more than adequate.

Yep, just do it where it sits. After you are done you'll forget all about it and the boat will work great. You should see where mine ended up. The only time I noticed it was when I noticed it. I haven't noticed it since then. I just have a boat that works great instead!

Another thing I found out about my hull is that it is about an inch or so longer on one side than it is on the other which I found out when I placed the deck inside it. Can't tell now though.

Its interesting , i debated to fix this one or not . I wanted a small skiff that could be handled by me , yet fit my son and i he wanted to go . I also wanted a few little things = alittle storage ,not alot just enough to tuck some stuff away , a small center console , and a livewell . I ran across a few pictures thou its not the same make as mine , its VERY similar and this is basically how i would want the boat . It don't have a livewell that i see but it gave me a few ideas and after the answers i have got in this post iam excited again to see how it turns out .

Budget is an issue so will see how close my budget of $ 800.00 will get me to get the inside the way i would like , Hopefully i can find a small console on craigslist to help me out

Iam really suprised at the price of wood around where i live . After alot of phone calls most of the morning :

Meranti Marine BS1088 for 90.00 a sheet 1/2 inch
Meranti Marine BS6566 (aquatech )for 65.00 a sheet 1/2 inch
BS1088 grade Okoume for 115.00 a sheet 1/2 inch

XL Fir marine plywood thats 45.00 a sheet 3/8

1 sided MDO 107.00 per sheet 1/2 inch

Best that any local lumber yard has a/c exterior / sanded one side at $36.00 a sheet 1/2 inch

and see if they can tell you where you can get some Arauco Plywood. They are supposed to be the "Big Shots" in the Orlando Lumber Distribution Business.

Few more questions , Looks like iam going to do the MDO , Its one sided unprimed i need right ? Iam going to need 2 sheets . I need to found out how much resin / csm to get , heres a quick draw of the approx deck size . I also need to get the bilge box in , where it sits do i glass this right to the hull or bed it like a stringer would be ?

yes i do . The 50 inch width is approx . It starts at 48 inch wide and works up to about 50 to 50 3/4 inch wide

You can use douglas fir and rip some stips to tack on the edges of the ply to make it wide enuf where needed. YOu will put the resin coated side down so you don't have to worry about coating it so all you will have to do is glass the top. Based on your drawing I'd guess-ti-mate you'll need 12 yds of 50" 1.5 oz CSM, 3 yds 1708 biax and 5 gallons of resin to do the deck. PB fillet it in, Coat the deck with resin first then when it tacks up tab it in with 8" strips of CSM and 1708. When that sets Put your first layer of CSM on going up the sides too. When that tacks up do one more layer and you're done and ready for Gelcoat. If you're gunna paint put wax in your last layer. Once it sets up do a light sanding and wash down with acetone and you're ready for paint.

Thank You Woodonglass , I do also need to add the side Panel part back on after the deck is . Should i glass the deck , then glass the side panels in ? If i use waxed resin on the final deck before i do the sides , would i just sand / rough where i would be tabbing the bottom of the side panels to the deck ? The 1708 i'd use for the tabbing of deck to hull where i use PB correct ?

What should i do to bed the bilge or do i just glass it to the hull ?

Btw i did find 1/2 inch MDO 1 sided unprimed OR 1/2 inch Fir marine ply for under 40.00 a sheet

I'd wait and ad wax after side panels were in. You'll get a better bond. Post a pic or drawing of the Bilge area. Not sure what you're trying to accomplish.
